After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, Marvel's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" finds Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off assailants sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy-the Winter Soldier.

Based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1941, Marvel's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" is produced by Kevin Feige, p.g.a., directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, from a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely, and stars Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo, Emily VanCamp and Hayley Atwell, with Robert Redford as Alexander Pierce and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER CONTINUES MARVEL STUDIOS' WINNING STREAK, PARTICULARLY FOR THE ACTORS

By Alex Tafet

It's tough for actors to be contracted to massive franchise films. They're serious, multi-year commitments that when working at maximum overdrive, don't leave the actor much time for recuperation. Signing on to one of these films - particularly Marvel Studios films, which notoriously contract their talent for multi-film deals - is not an easy decision.

Initially, Chris Evans was thisclose to saying "no" to the role of Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, a character who is making his third cinematic appearance in the excellent Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Evans was conflicted; what happens to his privacy when he becomes the face of a new Marvel franchise? He made his feelings on the subject matter quite public, wearing his reservations on his sleeve.

But now, three years and three movies later, he's singing a different tune. "Had I not done the movies, it would've been the biggest mistake of my life. It really would've been the biggest regret to date and there are plenty. It's changed everything for me. I mean not just what it's enabled me to do outside of these movies, but it's so comforting knowing that you're making good movies."

These "outside of these movies" opportunities he speaks of are in the form of smaller, critically acclaimed films that his presence alone green lights (2013's "The Iceman" starring Michael Shannon and Winona Ryder), as well as his directorial debut ("1:30 Train," out later this year). The Marvel films have not only made Chris Evans a household name-they've given him the opportunity to take his career in the direction he wants. It all circles back to his acceptance of the role, though. Like the character, Evans' personal nobility prevented him from jumping at the opportunity, because he was afraid of the extreme limelight... just like Steve Rogers.

That extreme personal relationship and connection with the character has given Evans the chance to flex his acting muscles (his performance is fantastic, filled with subtlety and nuance), and show everyone - including himself - just how perfect he is for the job.

See a clip from the movie here:

That would all mean nothing, however, if the films didn't satisfy Evans' needs as an artist. "It would be a nightmare to be trapped in this contract and be making films that you're not proud of, but Marvel has the Midas touch, so every time you suit up, you know that you're making something of quality. It's rewarding on every level, so thank God I had the right people in my life pushing me to make the right decision."

For Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff, aka The Black Widow), the continuous exploration of her character keeps her passion alive. Unlike Captain America, there is no Black Widow solo film (although Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has strongly hinted at the development of one), so every moment she has as a supporting character adds further dimension to the history of the Widow. Captain America: The Winter Soldier takes that exploration to the next level.

"I think this is the first time that we've really gotten to see kind of Natasha. You know, we saw a little bit of her in The Avengers and we saw a bit of her back story, but - and we'll see more of that in [The Avengers: Age of Ultron], but in this film, we really get to see Natasha as a person who gets up, gets ready for work in the morning, has a life outside of just her job once she's out of the suit."

Ms. Johansson embraces the history of the character and channels it through her performance, adding slight hints of heart behind Black Widow's cold, assassin exterior. That's what allows her to craft this character that, while still an enigma, audiences connect with. "I have the good fortune of playing a character that's sort of evolving with each kind of installment that you see her in," she says. "Going in to the play the character, of course, I have to understand who this character is and where she comes from and have this sort of rich back story and I think the exciting thing is just scraping away at a little part of that each time to reveal kind of a small part of the bigger picture of her and it's a very complex character, which is wonderful for me."

There is a common thread amongst the talent associated with Captain America: The Winter Soldier: they all have an extreme passion for the characters, the world, and honing their craft by embracing the two. Some are new to the game, like Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson aka The Falcon), who has just begun what is sure to be a long, successful Marvel Studios career. Other are building off what they did before, like Sebastian Stan (The Winter Soldier), taking his character work from Captain America: The First Avenger and multiplying it the nth degree in terrifying, captivating ways.

And then there's the ever-present Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), returning once again as the one-eyed director of S.H.I.E.L.D. "It's always a great, great joy to know that I'm going to be back in a space with all the people that I enjoy working with and being able to do things that I did on a very small scale when I was a kid. I mean this is, you know, a dream come true. You sit there and you read comic books when you're a kid and you wonder if there's a world like that. You grow up as an actor and they start making movies like that and you wonder, 'How can I get in that movie?' And then next thing you know, you're inside it and you're kind of like, 'Yeah.' So, you know, [they're] all pluses there."

This isn't just a dream come true for you, Mr. Jackson. We're all living the same fantasy as viewers. What once only existed as images from comic books projecting into our minds now occupies the silver screen. We're in an era where dreams are no longer exclusively for the subconscious-we can build anything, create whatever story we conceive of. All we need is conviction, dedication, and a talented body of people to bring those dreams to life.

It's a truly marvelous time.
