Tips for the Loyal Fans Attending CMA Music Fest 2009
Country Music fans will begin the countdown for the 2011 CMA Music Fest, the day they get home from this year's event. Though it's darn near impossible not to have a great time attending the event with country's biggest and best artists and their awesome fans, there are a few things that can put a damper on your good time such as rain, sunburn and missing an once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity. Here are some tips on how to avoid things we have learned the hard way.
1) Bring a lot of sunscreen! A lot of the activities take place outdoors and you should always have your sunscreen on. A bad sunburn will make you feel miserable the rest of the trip and ruin your good time. Don't forget the sunscreen for your lips too! Often overlooked, you could end up looking like you got a bad botox injection when sunburn causes your lips to swell. There is nothing attractive or comfortable about that!
2) Plan to drink A LOT of water. Going along with the heat/sunscreen thing... you don't know how fast your body can get dehydrated, especially if you are planning to enjoy the music at the River Stages for long periods of time and you're getting your groove on there. Be sure to budget to buy plenty of water and try to drink more when you get back to your hotel at night.
3) Wear comfortable shoes! You probably don't realize how much you are going to walk that week. From the parking lot to the event and back again, the photo line at the River Stages and LP Field, it all adds up! Though walking is good for you, it's going to be killer on your feet, legs and ankles if you are doing it all it your 7 inch stilettos. You might be lookin' good and turnin' heads but what good does that do you if you have to spend the next three days with your feet propped up and iced?
4) A.K.C.R - Always Keep Cameras Ready! You know that you are going to have a celebrity sighting at the Convention Center and at the concerts, but did you know that you were going to see Luke Bryan pumping gas while you were filling up the tank in your rental car? You should always have easy access to your camera in case at opportunity presents itself. You don't want to keep anyone waiting while you open the trunk, take out the souvenirs and food that you put on top of your backpack and dig through everything until you find your camera.
5) Speaking of running into celebrities at the gas station, restaurants, grocery store etc., and this even applies when you are going through the autograph lines at the convention center, try to remain calm and be respectful of the artist. If they are eating with their families, try to wait until they are exiting the restaurant to ask for a picture or an autograph. Say, "Excuse me," introduce yourself, and ask if they have a minute to pose for a photo. Trust us when we tell you that it will be a much more memorable experience for both you and the artist if you aren't screaming at the top of your lungs, "Oh My GOSH! I LOVE YOU!" over and over again. This only draws attention to the artist who might want to be low-key that day and puts them on guard like they might need security or something. What would you do if a stranger came running up to you, screaming in your face and taking pictures? You would hopefully run for the hills! Make your Mama proud and use your manners and chances are the celebrity would be happy to oblige your request.
6) And speaking of cameras... be sure to have plenty of extra batteries on hand, memory cards, anything your camera needs to operate, have two or three of. It is the worst thing ever to be the next person in line after waiting three hours to meet your favorite singer, and not being able to get your camera on because the battery is dead, or the memory card is full of priceless pictures you can't delete. When you are about five people away from the artists, turn you camera on, check the setting, and make sure everything is ready so you don't hold up the line by trying to figure out what is wrong with you camera!
7) It might be a good idea to print up some sheets of paper with your name and email address on them to keep in your backpack, just in case. This comes in handy if you end up having to take someone else's picture for them or if someone has to take your picture for you. It saves time of having to dig for pen and scrap paper to exchange information.
8) For those people with the fancy interchangeable lens', make sure the lens is set to auto before getting that one posed shot with an artist that you can't check before moving out of line. The person taking the picture will probably assume that it is automatic and not check the focus. It would suck if your one glorious moment was blurry because the lens got knocked around in your bag and switched to manual.
9) When you are leaving an area, double check your surroundings to make sure that nothing has fallen out of your bags. One of our staffers lost a camera lens at a fan club party because they didn't know that it had escaped. Double check yourself and be sure that you have all of your belongings when you move from one place to another.
10) You might want to label important and valuable items such as cameras or video cameras with your name and a contact number or email address in case they do get lost or left behind. Please be Good Samaritans! If you find something, do your best to find its owner. Think about how upset you would be if you lost your camera and memories of your trip that far or a sentimental piece of jewelry. We whole-heartedly believe in Karma and you will be rewarded by the Universe for doing the right thing.

CMA TO DONATE ALL PROCEEDS OF 2010 CMA MUSIC FESTIVAL TO FLOOD RELIEF IN MIDDLE TENNESSEE AND MUSIC EDUCATION IN METRO NASHVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS
NASHVILLE – In response to the devastating floods that have plagued the City of Nashville and Middle Tennessee, CMA has announced that 50 percent of the net proceeds of 2010 CMA Music Festival will be donated to the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee for flood relief. This is in addition to CMA’s already established annual donation of 50 percent of the net proceeds to Metro Nashville Public Schools for music education through the Keep the Music Playing program. In total, 100 percent of the net proceeds of the event will be given to benefit Nashville’s public school students and Middle Tennessee families in need.
CMA Music Festival is Nashville’s signature music event, drawing 56,000 people from the region as well as every state in the nation and visitors from 26 countries around the globe, while bringing in more than $22 million in direct visitor spending to the local economy.
“This year with all the downtown businesses as well as our tourism industry suffering huge losses due to flood damage, it is vitally important to the Nashville business community that CMA Music Festival continues as planned,” said Steve Moore, CMA Chairman of the Board. “CMA is proud to step up and help our area by donating half of the CMA Music Festival’s net proceeds to the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee to help its flood relief efforts while we continue our important commitment to children and music education.”
“CMA has always been a great supporter of Music City through the Association’s Keep the Music Playing initiative,” said Nashville Mayor Karl Dean. “This added contribution to aid in flood recovery efforts will be incredibly helpful and demonstrates the great partnership that exists between the City of Nashville, CMA Music Festival, and the Country Music industry.”
“Millions of lives have been affected by this disaster. While some will recover quickly, others will take months or years to rebuild, and The Community Foundation’s disaster funds will continue to strategically address needs as they emerge and evolve,” said Ellen Lehman, President of The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. “It has been incredible to see this community’s outpouring of generosity, and we are thrilled, but not surprised, to see CMA join in leading the efforts to help this city rebuild.”
The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee has activated its Metro Nashville Disaster Response Fund in partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Emergency Management to support relief efforts. Grants from the fund will be made to nonprofits supporting relief, restoration, and clean-up efforts in the Davidson County area.
CMA Music Festival has benefited charity since 2001, but in 2006 a decision was made to direct all funds to one central cause – music education in Metro Nashville Public Schools – through a partnership with the Nashville Alliance for Public Education. To date, CMA has donated more than $3.3 million to purchase more than 3,000 instruments and musical equipment and supplies, providing thousands of Metro Nashville Public Schools students with the resources and opportunities they could not have afforded on their own, and giving many of them a strong reason to remain in school. According to Metro schools statistics, 98 percent of students in arts programs graduate.
Now in its 39th year, CMA Music Festival began as Fan Fair in 1972 as a unique celebration of the relationship between Country Music artists and their fans in the heart of Music City. More than 2,000 Country acts, from the legends and superstars to today’s rising hit makers and hopefuls, have lent their time and talent to the event over the decades.
Nashville’s signature music event features concerts, autograph signings, family activities, and more. This unparalleled celebration of America’s music draws thousands of fans and media from all corners of the globe to Nashville. CMA Music Festival was dubbed the “crown jewel of Country Music festivals” by USA Today and winner of the International Entertainment Buyers Association’s 2004, 2006, and 2008 LIVE! Award for Festival of the Year.

CMA RECEIVES FRIEND OF EDUCATION AWARD FROM METROPOLITAN NASHVILLE EDUCATION ASSOCIATION FOR SUPPORT OF MUSIC EDUCATION IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS
NASHVILLE – CMA received the 2010 Friend of Education Award from the Metropolitan Nashville Education Association during the National Teacher Day Banquet last night in Nashville for the Association’s support of music education in Metro Nashville Public Schools through the “Keep the Music Playing” program.
Half the net proceeds from CMA Music Festival are donated to the cause through a partnership with the Nashville Alliance for Public Education. To date, CMA has donated $3.3 million to benefit music education programs for Nashville’s 75,000 public school students. This money has been used to build music labs and purchase more than 3,000 instruments, and much needed supplies.
“It means a great deal to be recognized by the teachers,” said Steve Moore, CMA Chairman of the Board. “We may provide the raw materials – the trumpets, tubas, and trombones – but the teachers are the ones on the frontline inspiring their students to create music, which is the foundation of CMA’s mission.”
“MNEA and Nashville’s teachers cherish the artists who contribute their time to help provide our students with musical instruments,” said Erick Huth, MNEA President. “The CMA Music Festival helps sustain Nashville’s reputation as Music City USA!”
“By putting instruments in the hands of students, CMA is providing the resources and opportunities these students could not have afforded on their own – giving many of them a strong reason to remain in school,” said Pam Garrett, Executive Director of the Nashville Alliance for Public Education. “CMA is very deserving of this honor.”
Artists perform at CMA Music Festival for free. To show its appreciation for their dedication and time, CMA donates half the net proceeds from the Festival to “Keep the Music Playing” on their behalf. When the program began in 2001, it was known as CMA’s “Cause for Celebration!” From 2001-2005 CMA contributed more than $800,000 to more than 100 worthy causes. In 2006, the CMA Artist Relations Committee decided to channel those financial resources into a single cause – music education.
Music makes a difference. Last year, Metro public schools’ performing arts students had a 98 percent graduation rate.
CMA Music Festival is an unparalleled music experience celebrating America’s music. The event brings the community together with fans from around the world. Now in its 39th year, CMA Music Festival will be held on Thursday through Sunday, June 10-13, in downtown Nashville. The $5 discount lowers admission to $14 for an adult and $4 for youth ages 6-17. Admission for children ages five and under is free. Tickets are extremely limited, and must be purchased in advance in order to secure a tour. In addition to the family-friendly ticket prices to tour the home, Fontanel Mansion will offer free round-trip shuttles from downtown Nashville for CMA Music Festival attendees. Tickets can be purchased beginning April 1 by visiting www.fontanelmansion.com.
Located less than 15 minutes from downtown Nashville, Fontanel Mansion boasts three stories, more than 18 rooms, 13 bathrooms, 5 fireplaces, 2 kitchens, an indoor pool, and even an indoor shooting range on 136 acres. An exclusive spot for the stars, the home and grounds have been the setting for numerous photo and video shoots, CMT’s top-rated “Gone Country” show and more. Nashville’s only Country Music mansion tour, Fontanel Mansion will give visitors a hands-on immersion into the lives of Country Music greats Barbara Mandrell, Alabama, Gretchen Wilson, and more.
Visitors to the Mansion can also enjoy a meal at The Farm House, a 140-seat restaurant that will showcase local produce, dairy and meats delivered from sustainable sources and neighboring farms. Enjoy a little nature and hike the free trails at Fontanel, which wind over two miles, stretching through the property and woods around the home.
“CMA Music Festival attendees are some of Country Music’s most dedicated fans, and many of them have traveled countless miles to get to the events that week,” added Oswald. “We’re anxious for them to come out and enjoy an experience never before available in Nashville.”
About the Fontanel Mansion
A ticket to tour the Mansion at Fontanel is like a ticket to the inside life of Nashville’s most famous export. Here at Fontanel, you get to do more than just look, you are welcome to touch, see feel and live in this magnificent home. Grab a guitar and snap a photo. Have a seat in the sofas. Stay a while and relax in the pool atrium.
You’ll learn about the process of building a 27,000 square foot log home, mere minutes from downtown Nashville, yet lifetimes away from the average home. You’ll learn about the land and how the Mandrell family started a legacy of sustainability that survives today.
A tour of the Mansion is guided in small intimate groups, taking you from room to room with amazing sights and special stories around every corner. Your personal host will greet you at the front door and start the tour in the Great Room. You will be guided through all 27,000 square feet, ending your tour in the glorious sunlit Pool Atrium. There you will be able to grab refreshments and stay and relax as long as you wish, discussing your Fontanel experience with experts and fellow visitors. BILLY CURRINGTON, ALAN JACKSON, TIM MCGRAW, AND KELLIE PICKLER ADDED TO 2010 CMA MUSIC FESTIVAL
McGraw’s First Appearance at Festival Since 2001
NASHVILLE – Billy Currington, Alan Jackson, Tim McGraw and Kellie Pickler are the latest additions to the artist lineup for 2010 CMA Music Festival, which will be held Thursday through Sunday, June 10-13 in Nashville, Tenn.
Previously announced artists include Jason Aldean, Lady Antebellum, Martina McBride, Reba McEntire, Brad Paisley, Rascal Flatts, Darius Rucker, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, and Zac Brown Band. All of the announced artists will perform during the Nightly Concerts at LP Field.
This will be McGraw’s first appearance at the event since 2001, when he was a surprise guest during Kenny Chesney’s performance as part of the Nightly Concerts at LP Field and the event was still known as Fan Fair. His last announced appearance was in 2000, the last year Fan Fair was held at the Nashville Fairgrounds. He has participated in the event eight times since his Fan Fair debut in 1993. McGraw has won 11 CMA Awards, including Entertainer of the Year in 2001; Male Vocalist in 1999 and 2000; Album of the Year in 1998 (A Place in the Sun) and 1999 (Everywhere); and Musical Event of the Year in 2007 on “Find Out Who Your Friends Are” with Tracy Lawrence and Chesney.
“We are thrilled to welcome Tim back to CMA Music Festival in 2010,” said Steve Moore, CMA Board Chairman. “Our event established its tradition of hosting the superstars of our format at its inception in 1972 with artists such as Waylon Jennings, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, and Tammy Wynette. Take a glance at this year’s performer list and you’ll see we’re living up to that tradition.”
Few superstars have been as supportive of the event as Jackson, who has made 15 appearances since his Festival debut in 1990. Jackson last performed during the Nightly Concerts at LP Field in 2008. He has received 16 CMA Awards, including three Entertainer of the Year trophies (1995, 2002, 2003); two Male Vocalist wins (2002, 2003); and two Album of the Year Awards (1994 for Common Thread: The Songs of the Eagles, and 2002 for Drive).
“We appreciate the tremendous support that Alan has always shown to CMA Music Festival and the fans,” said Moore.
Currington has participated in the event four times since his Festival debut in 2004 as part of the Daytime Concerts at Riverfront Park. He last performed on the Nightly Concerts at LP Field in 2007. Currington has received three CMA Award nominations, including two in 2009 for Single and Music Video of the Year, both for “People Are Crazy.”
Pickler performed before an intimate audience at a nightclub as part of filming for the Festival television special during last year’s event, but her last appearance as part of the Nightly Concerts was in 2008. She made her CMA Music Festival debut in 2007. Pickler has received two CMA Award nominations: both in the New Artist of the Year category (2007, when it was called the Horizon Award, and 2008 under its new name). She has also served as an active spokesperson for CMA’s Keep the Music Playing program and participated in a delivery of new musical instruments to a Nashville middle school and at the presentation of the 2009 CMA Music Festival contribution in December.
Now in its 39th year, CMA Music Festival began as Fan Fair in 1972 as a unique celebration of the relationship between Country Music artists and their fans in the heart of Music City USA. More than 2,000 Country acts, from the legends and superstars to today’s rising hit makers and hopefuls, have lent their time and talent to the event over the decades.
The artists participate for free, and in appreciation, CMA donates half the net proceeds of the Festival to support music education in Metro Nashville Public Schools through the Keep the Music Playing program. To date, $3.3 million has been donated to purchase musical instruments and supplies, providing thousands of Metro Nashville Public Schools students with the resources and opportunities they could not have afforded on their own, and giving many of them a strong reason to remain in school.

CARRIE UNDERWOOD SURPRISES YOUNG FAN WITH NEWS SHE’S PERFORMING AT CMA MUSIC FESTIVAL IN JUNE
NASHVILLE – A trembling 15-year-old fan was the first to find out: Carrie Underwood will be among the stars performing at this year’s CMA Music Festival Thursday through Sunday, June 10-13 in Nashville.
Underwood took time out of her packed Super Bowl rehearsal schedule, where she is singing the National Anthem on Sunday, to call 15-year-old Riley Ahlstrand with the news. Ahlstrand, an ardent fan of the Festival, was being interviewed by a news crew from the Nashville ABC affiliate (WKRN) when reporter Brad Schmitt’s phone rang and he handed it to the wide-eyed teen.
On the line was Underwood to tell the nearly speechless girl that she would be performing at the Festival this year; and Ahlstrand heard it first.
“I always look forward to the excitement of CMA Music Festival,” said Underwood after the call. “Its fans like Riley that make the week so much fun.”
“This is the best thing that has ever happened, said Ahlstrand, with tears still streaming down her face. “I couldn’t have dreamed anything cooler than this!”
Ahlstrand came to WKRN’s attention after she sent an email to CMA: “My dream is to meet Carrie Underwood, and the CMA Music Festival is my absolute favorite thing…I want more than anything for Carrie Underwood to appear at CMA Music Festival this year. Thank you so much for everything that you do, and for putting on such a spectacular week June 10-13! This truly is the ultimate fan experience.”
“CMA Music Festival is about the fans and this was a terrific way to kick off what is sure to be a star-packed roster of artists performing this year,” said Steve Moore, Chairman of the CMA Board of Directors. “We have a long history of surprising our fans and creating once-in-a-lifetime experiences, and this is only the beginning.”
