on Ashlee Simpson’s “SNL” snafu: “I think that Ashlee Simpson was just really unlucky, you know? There are so many even bigger artists that are doing it so much worse than she is, and she is the one who had to take all the blame. That sucks for her. I don’t think it hurt anybody, except her. But I think that maybe it will open people’s eyes, maybe people will look harder at the music that they’re considering real and the type of artists that they’re considering talented.”

on her VH1 Save the Music tour: “Last March, we put together this idea to do a school tour [to promote my album]. VH1 heard about it and they decided that they wanted to help sponsor it because we’re promoting to kids about staying in school, staying away from drugs and making sure they take advantage of what’s offered to them, such as music programs, because all that stuff is getting taken away so quickly because of the funds. Schools don’t think it’s important to offer any sort of band or choir or anything like that. They don’t think it’s important enough to spend their money on.

“So we decided to go forward with it and it worked out great. The response was incredible. There were kids sending me e-mails about “I now know how dangerous drugs are. Thanks for making it cool to not do drugs at my school.” I think that if you just hit one kid then that makes it worth it. This is something that I love to do, and if it’s changing somebody’s life then it’s making the whole thing worthwhile.”

on why she’s so passionate about keeping music education in school: “I didn’t have a music program in high school – I didn’t have a choir. I didn’t have band. I didn’t have any sort of theater. I didn’t even have cheerleading, like there was no dance troupe or any sort of thing like that, which was awful. All of the things that I excelled in I didn’t get the chance to participate in at school. Instead, I had to take art or computer or something like that just to waste my time. Everybody else was getting to do what they loved – football, drawing, film classes – but they had no music. I would have even been happy playing the piano or something like that; I just wanted to get involved.”

on her fashion style: “I guess you could consider it trendy, a little bit sexy but still very classy. I like to wear things that aren’t offensive. I’m really just not comfortable showing a whole bunch of skin. That’s not cute to me.”

on her fashion idol: “The person I look up to most for their wardrobe is Beyonce. I love the things that she wears. I think that she does a really great job at being sexy but not overdoing it. I think she’s classy. She does a really good job at balancing the different looks that she wants to do.”

on handling her own wardrobe: “Nobody else gets to make the choices for me, especially when it comes to clothes or hair or makeup. There is nobody that knows me better than I do, you know? And I don’t like to listen to other people telling me, “You would look really cute in this,” when it’s something that I would never wear. I like to maintain my own personality in the stuff that I do. I’m just not comfortable in a lot of things that people try to put me in, so I handle it all myself.”

on her favorite place to shop: “I’m totally into Melrose, all the stuff down there. I think it’s really cool when you go down there because it’s just so diverse. There is so much different stuff down there. I don’t like having the same thing as somebody else because your clothing is a way to express yourself. Who wants to be dressed the same as somebody else? It drives me nuts. So there’s a lot of one-of-a-kind stores down there and I like those.”

on her post-singing career: “I don’t plan on being a singer forever. I understand that when I get older I’m probably not going to want to do this, as I get into raising a family and all that stuff. I’m planning on getting into the industry at a more business level -- probably into marketing or A&R or maybe working at a label, producing.”

on her advice to aspiring musicians: “I’d say just hard work. I am a firm believer in the fact that it will always pay off for you. You never hear of anybody who works really hard their whole life and then never gets anything out of it. It just doesn’t happen.

“Also, stay focused. Make sure you’re taking care of everything that you need to, and that you’re not getting sidetracked and falling into the wrong things.

“And just go for it 100 percent. I think if you’re going to do something, then do it. Don’t just talk about it. Or if you are going to talk about it, then tell people you’re going to do it because when you tell people you kind of force yourself to follow through. You don’t want to let yourself down, but even more you don’t want to embarrass yourself by letting other people down.”
