An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits-Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand-with the galaxy's fate in the balance.

"Guardians of The Galaxy" Defends the Title of Summer's Most Anticipated Movie And Comes Out A Winner!

By: Amy Vorpahl

This summer, Marvel Studios and James Gunn deliver a fantastic, much-anticipated superhero movie based on the comic book with the same title, Guardians of the Galaxy. James Gunn is best known as the screenwriter of other adventure movies like Scooby-Doo and its sequel as well as the writer-director of the film Super. So he is a perfect fit as a hyphenate for Marvel's new silver screen endeavor. The whole creative team brought characters to life and effects to the screen in such a fun, visually exciting way, made even better by 3-D. "Guardians of the Galaxy" gives both comic book fans and blockbuster-seeking audiences exactly what they're looking for.

The story begins when an entitled, arrogant outlaw, Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) recovers a relic he sees only as a paycheck. When a bounty is placed on his head, and world-domination-driven Ronan (Lee Pace) declares he wants the relic for himself, the adventure is on. Quill partners up with a ragtag group of solo-operating bandits, played by Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, and Dave Bautista, all reluctant to be part of a team. Although Rocket and Groot's (Cooper and Diesel) relationship steals the show, Drax gets some of the biggest laughs, and no one can take their eyes off Gremora (which is a compliment but also a nice way of saying the character--the only girl on the team--for some reason wasn't given many jokes).

Heists, hijinks, and witty one-liners keep the heroes busy and sufficiently on their toes throughout the entire movie. And while the stakes are high, they still deal with problems with an irreverent flippancy that we love to see in overly confident anti-heroes. It takes some dire straits and almost losing each other for them to realize that they're better together than alone, and at the end of the film are dubbed "The Guardians of the Galaxy."

The many fight and chase sequences are fun, exciting, and diverse with cool weapons, tactics and maneuvers. However, for most of the movie, the fights seem unbalanced. Our heroes always have the upper hand on tactics and especially equipment while the bad guys seem to fight using ships and guns made of baby pieces of stunt glass. There are also some random super-powers that show up only toward the end of the movie that seem rather convenient. For the most part, though, the action scenes are purely entertaining, and the 3D experience is everything you could hope for in a superhero movie.

Even if you hate comic book inspired movies, though, you'll be jamming in your seat to the 70s pop soundtrack riddled throughout, taking the edge off fierce fight sequences and otherwise intense moments. The "mix tape" is almost its own character, and audiences will find themselves looking forward to its next appearance. In fact, the whole movie includes awesome references to 1980s pop culture (from Quill's childhood culture) that help ground the sci-fi Marvel universe in contemporary times and add to the humor of the film.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" gives audiences everything they are surely expecting from a superhero movie: mystical relics, tyrannical bad guys, space ships, and hadron guns. By the end of the film, audiences are promised to be dancing to the movie's tunes, reciting one-liners, and tapping their feet waiting for a sequel.

The thrill ride begins on August 1.
