"The Last Song" Plays A Little Deeper Than You Expect

By: Susan J. Yeager

From the trailer, "The Last Song" leads you to believe that this film is a story about a teenage girl that spends a summer repairing a broken relationship with her estranged father and falling in love for the first time. It's true that a big chunk of the story centers on those two monumental things. However, there are some even bigger notes in this "Song" that you haven't heard yet.

In a drastic change of pace from the "Hannah Montana" character that Miley Cyrus is best known for, the actress plays "Ronnie Miller," a recent high school graduate who has held a grudge against her Dad for divorcing her Mom and leaving the family to move back to his hometown in Georgia to live on the beach. Though he has tried to reach out to Ronnie through letters, the two haven't communicated much since the split and Ronnie has become a seemingly, rebellious teenager who has even gotten in trouble with the law.

While her younger brother, Jonah, is excited to be at with his Dad at the beach house, Ronnie is less-than-thrilled to be dropped off for a whole summer and promptly heads to the boardwalk to meet some new friends. It's there she meets Will for the first time, a volleyball playing hottie who will eventually get to show his many layers and sides. She also meets "Blaze," a girl about her own age with no real family or home to speak of, proving that just when you think you got it bad, someone else has it worse.

As the story unfolds, Will and Ronnie, though seemingly from two separate worlds, end up with more in common than anyone could have imagined. Knowing that Cyrus and Will's portrayer, Liam Hemsworth are together in real life adds a little bonus to the movie. You can literally see this two falling in love and it's sweet.

We're not big on spoilers but let's just put it this way, the story was conceived and written by Nicholas Sparks. He's the same guy who wrote "A Walk to Remember" and "The Notebook." And well, have you ever seen anything from Nicholas Sparks where someone didn't die? You might want to grab some extra napkins at the concession stand before you go in or pack some tissues. You're gonna need them.

No one should write a review about this film and not mention Bobby Coleman who played Jonah. The range of emotions this kid has is way beyond his years. He had the audience cracking up and bawling at all the right times. This young man is going to go on to do great, great things.

This movie has a lot of themes and most of them are going to be relatable to everyone in the audience. It's about how families and people aren't perfect. It's about forgiveness. It's about having to grow up when we don't think we're ready. It's about realizing that we are stronger than we could have ever imagined and having faith. Most importantly, however, it's about finding people who matter and hanging on to them with everything you've got.

Miley fans will be happy to get to watch the actress stretch her wings and she more than holds her own with veteran actors Greg Kinnear and Kelly Preston who play her parents in the film. The story is a meaningful one even if this "Song" is a sad one to hear.

The Secret is Out! "The Spy Next Door" is Fun For the Whole Family!

By: Susan J. Yeager

Jackie Chan is probably not the first person you would think of when considering a babysitter for your children. In "The Spy Next Door" Chan plays "Bob Ho," a pen salesman who seems to be that nice neighbor next door. Bob is dating Gillian (Amber Valletta), an artist who lives beside him and is a single Mom to three children.

"Farren" (played earnestly by Madeline Carroll), is a fourteen year old teenager who is moody and angry because her father has left her with Gillian and two half-siblings. She is the ring leader against Bob and Gillian's relationship because she thinks Bob is boring and not good enough for the family.

Cutie, Will Shadley, plays "Ian," a super smart kid who is afraid to seem too smart at school so he will fit in with others. He too, thinks Bob is boring and would rather see his Mom bring someone a little more exciting into their lives.

And last but not least, there is the adorable "Nora" (played by spitfire Alina Foley). Nora is the first to catch on to how likable Bob really is but still sides with her siblings because that's just what young kids do.

What Gillian and the kids don't know is that Bob is really a top secret CIA agent. He's wrapping up the last of his missions in order to leave that life behind and create a "normal" life with Gillian and the kids. When Gillian must leave town to care for a sick family member, Bob offers to take care of the kids.

What Bob doesn't know is that Ian has accidentally downloaded a top secret formula and now the bad guys want to find the people who have been let in on their plan to do bad things to the environment. When the bad guys show up to punish the person who stole the formula, Bob's cover is blown and he inadvertently drags the kids into helping with the mission. The is way cool with the kids but no so much with Gillian who is furious at Bob for putting the kids in danger.

Can Bob earn love and respect from the kids? Will Gillian ever forgive him so they can have a "happily ever after?" Do the bad guys get away? You're just going to have to see the movie and see for yourself!

"The Spy Next Door" is heavy on laughs and sweet moments between Bob and the kids. George Lopez and Billy Ray Cyrus make appearances as Bob's CIA co-workers. Teenage girls will be happy to see heartthrob Lucas Till in the movie, even if he is a bad guy.

There is some martial arts-type violence in the film, which should be expected in a Chan film, but a lot of it is over-the-top - comic relief that would be hard to attempt at home. Most of the antics will have you laughing out loud.

Overall, the message of not judging a book by its cover comes across loud and clear in this funny family movie. It also brings up the point that we never know who is going to help us live up to our full potential. For the kids it's Bob and for Bob, it's the kids. All we know is a "Bob Ho" type is welcomed in our neighborhood anytime.

TAYLOR LAUTNER TO PLAY STRETCH ARMSTRONG AS UNIVERSAL POSITIONS TWO MAJOR EVENT RELEASES FOR 2012

Battleship Set for Global Memorial Day Weekend Release and Stretch Armstrong Will Be Made in 3-D

Universal Pictures announced breaking news about two of its upcoming event films based on popular Hasbro brands, Stretch Armstrong and Battleship. The announcements were made today by Universal Pictures Chairman Adam Fogelson and Co-Chairman Donna Langley.

Taylor Lautner (the Twilight saga) will play the title character in the upcoming 3-D superhero adventure Stretch Armstrong, to be released in 2012.

The epic action-adventure Battleship has moved its release to May 25, anchoring the Memorial Day weekend of 2012.

"Universal has put all the elements in place to successfully launch two of our classic Hasbro brands on the big screen," said Brian Goldner, President and CEO of Hasbro, Inc. "The addition of Taylor Lautner and the 3-D twist to Stretch Armstrong, in addition to giving Pete Berg and the filmmakers the extra time and resources to make Battleship an even bigger summer blockbuster, is sure to pay dividends when the film is released in 2012."

Peter Berg (Hancock, The Kingdom) came aboard in Fall 2009 to produce and direct Battleship, which will unfold as a massive Naval adventure across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force. Originally slated for release in July 2011, the film was moved to give it the time and resources to thoroughly realize its huge-scale ambitions and position it for Memorial Day weekend in 2012. Scott Stuber (The Wolfman, Couples Retreat) is producing Battleship through his Universal-based Stuber Pictures, and Sarah Aubrey (The Kingdom, upcoming Dune) is producing with Berg for Film 44. Brian Goldner and Bennet Schneir are producing for Hasbro.

"We believe in Pete Berg and the incredible vision that he and the Battleship team have for this film," said Fogelson. "We're honored that Hasbro is partnering with us to turn one of its landmark properties into a huge summer box-office hit."

Stretch Armstrong is moving to 2012 to allot time to shape the project into a 3-D superhero adventure and to accommodate Lautner's existing commitments.

"In the past two years, Taylor has emerged as a real star at the global box office. He brings the perfect balance of energy and athleticism to the role of an unlikely super hero with a fantastic super power," said Langley. "We couldn't be more pleased that he has agreed to be our Stretch."

Stretch Armstrong is based on the iconic action figure made popular around the world beginning in the 1970s and re-launched in the 1990s. Academy Award®-winning producer Brian Grazer (A Beautiful Mind, 8 Mile, American Gangster) will team with Hasbro to bring Stretch Armstrong to life. Steve Oedekerk (Bruce Almighty) has written the screenplay, and Hasbro's Goldner and Schneir also produce.

Vivendi Entertainment to Deliver 'LETTERS TO GOD' to the Big Screen

FIREPROOF and FACING THE GIANTS producer David Nixon directs inspirational movie set for release on April 9, 2010.

Vivendi Entertainment (VE) has announced it will release its faith based family film LETTERS TO GOD, nationwide on April 9, 2010.

Directed by David Nixon, best known as one of the producers of FIREPROOF and FACING THE GIANTS and co-directed by Patrick Doughtie, LETTERS TO GOD stars Robyn Lively (THE KARATE KID PART III, WILDCATS), Jeffrey S.S. Johnson (HELTER SKELTER, A COAT OF SNOW), Tanner Maguire (SAVING SARAH CAIN, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER), Maree Cheatham (MR. & MRS. SMITH, BEETLEJUICE), Michael Christopher Bolten (HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, THE WOODS HAVE EYES), Bailee Madison (BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA, BROTHERS, the upcoming DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK) and Ralph Waite (THE WALTONS, COOL HAND LUKE).

The film is the first from Possibility Pictures, which is led by Nixon, along with producer Kim Dawson (BOBBY JONES: STROKE OF GENIUS, TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES I,II,III), executive producer Tom Swanson (COME AWAY HOME), and writer Sandra Thrift. Based on a story written by Doughtie inspired by his son's battle with cancer, the screenplay is written by Doughtie, Art D'Alessandro, Thrift and Cullen Douglas.

A heartfelt tale of inspiration, hope and redemption, LETTERS TO GOD is the story of what happens when one boy's walk of faith crosses paths with one man's search for meaning--the resulting transformational journey touches the lives of everyone around them.

Tyler Doherty (TANNER MAGUIRE) is an extraordinary eight-year-old boy. Surrounded by a loving family and community, and armed with the courage of his faith, he faces his daily battle against cancer with bravery and grace. To Tyler, God is a friend, a teacher and the ultimate pen pal--Tyler's prayers take the form of letters, which he composes and mails on a daily basis.

The letters find their way into the hands of Brady McDaniels (JEFFREY S.S. JOHNSON), a beleaguered postman standing at a crossroads in his life. At first, he is confused and conflicted over what to do with the letters. But the decision he ultimately makes becomes a testament to the quiet power of one boy's shining spirit and unshakeable faith.

"This film is a powerful testimony of what can happen when one young boy has faith," said Nixon. "Tyler wrote his prayers, not as much for himself as for others. He believed that God was taking care of him and those around him. There are so many people facing difficult situations who need that same kind of hope, and that is why we made LETTERS TO GOD."

"The purpose of this film is not to show the difficult side of cancer, but to inspire those dealing with serious challenges in their own life to find hope by turning to family, friends and faith," said Dawson. "We've seen many examples of people who have survived cancer just because they had hope - a hope that comes from a belief in God. That is the message we want to spread with this movie."

"Movies can touch lives, change perceptions and renew hearts," said Swanson. "LETTERS TO GOD will be a bright light in a darkened theater that lifts up audiences, encouraging them to go out and make a difference. It is an opportunity to build a bridge of hope. And to enhance the overall experience of seeing the film," Swanson added. "We have partnered with Zondervan Publishers (a division of HarperCollins) and created a powerful suite of six books and a Bible, available in thousand of retail stores on March 12. This will be complemented with a soundtrack that has been compiled by music supervisor David McKenna for his label Bonded Records. Distributed by Fontana/Universal Music Group Distribution, the soundtrack will be available prior to the film's release."

Vivendi Entertainment President Tom O'Malley commented, "I am thrilled to be working with Possibility Pictures on the release of their first feature film. LETTERS TO GOD is a movie that will not only entertain, but inspire audiences everywhere. This is a very special picture."

The deal was negotiated by Yolanda Macias on behalf of Vivendi Entertainment and Kim Dawson on behalf of Possibility Pictures.

Heidi Murkoff said, "If there's one experience in life that's universally shared, it's pregnancy -- the joy, the excitement, the trepidation, the humor, the heartburn. I'm so happy to be working with Phoenix Pictures, Lionsgate and the impressively pregnant Heather to bring my baby to life. I'm a proud mom all over again!"

Medavoy, Messer and Thwaites said, "We feel Heidi's book provides the perfect launching point to tell a funny and poignant story and start a wonderful franchise using this iconic and beloved brand. Heather has crafted a great tale, full of rich characters, and we are all delighted to be working with Joe, Alli and Wolfgang on the film."

The deal was negotiated for Lionsgate by Robert Melnik, Lionsgate Executive Vice President, Business & Legal Affairs, and Hammer; by Cliff Roberts and Adriana Alberghetti at WME, Alex Goldstone at Anonymous Content and attorney Warren Dern of Sloane, Offer, Weber and Dern, on behalf of Hach; and by Rochel Blachman, Phoenix Pictures Executive Vice President, Business Affairs, and producer Messer, on behalf of Phoenix Pictures.

Hach is currently writing the screenplay based on her novel "Freaky Monday" for CBS Films.

Phoenix is currently in production with Fox Searchlight's Darren Aronofsky-directed BLACK SWAN, starring Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis and Vincent Cassell. In addition, they have Paramount's SHUTTER ISLAND, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, being released on February 19 and Mikael Hafstrom's SHANGHAI for The Weinstein Company, to be released later this year.

Spider-Man: Summer 2012

Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012.

Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios announced today they are moving forward with a film based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on a teenager dealing with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises.

The new chapter in the Spider-Man franchise produced by Columbia, Marvel Studios and Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will have a new cast and filmmaking team. Spider-Man 4 was to have been released in 2011, but had not yet gone into production.

"A decade ago we set out on this journey with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire and together we made three Spider-Man films that set a new bar for the genre. When we began, no one ever imagined that we would make history at the box-office and now we have a rare opportunity to make history once again with this franchise. Peter Parker as an ordinary young adult grappling with extraordinary powers has always been the foundation that has made this character so timeless and compelling for generations of fans. We're very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter's roots and we look forward to working once again with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin on this new beginning," said Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

"Working on the Spider-Man movies was the experience of a lifetime for me. While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job," said Sam Raimi.

"We have had a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration and friendship with Sam and Tobey and they have given us their best for the better part of the last decade. This is a bittersweet moment for us because while it is hard to imagine Spider-Man in anyone else's hands, I know that this was a day that was inevitable," said Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, who has served as the studio's chief production executive since the beginning of the franchise. "Now everything begins anew, and that's got us all tremendously excited about what comes next. Under the continuing supervision of Avi and Laura, we have a clear vision for the future of Spider-Man and can't wait to share this exciting new direction with audiences in 2012."

"Spider-Man will always be an important franchise for Sony Pictures and a fresh start like this is a responsibility that we all take very seriously," said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures. "We have always believed that story comes first and story guides the direction of these films. As we move onto the next chapter, we will stay true to that principle and will do so with the highest respect for the source material and the fans and moviegoers who deserve nothing but the best when it comes to bringing these stories and characters to life on the big screen."

The studio will have more news about Spider-Man in 2012 in the coming weeks as it prepares for production of the film.

HUBBLE 3D TO REVEAL UNPRECEDENTED VIEWS OF THE UNIVERSE IN IMAX® THEATRES STARTING MARCH 19, 2010

Audiences to accompany spacewalking astronauts as they perform the final upgrade to the Hubble Space Telescope

IMAX Corporation (NASDAQ: IMAX; TSX: IMX), and Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that Hubble 3D will be released exclusively in IMAX® and IMAX® 3D theatres worldwide beginning March 19, 2010, with expansion to additional IMAX locations on April 23rd, timed to the Hubble Space Telescope's 20th Anniversary.

The IMAX 3D camera, which flew onboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis, captured stunning 3D images of the intricate spacewalks required to service the telescope during the most recent mission last May. Shot by the STS-125 astronauts, this intimate look at the complexities of repairing the telescope will put IMAX audiences right there along-side the spacewalking astronauts. Hubble 3D will combine this awe-inspiring IMAX footage with breathtaking up-close imagery of distant galaxies, the birth of stars and planets, and more - revealing the cosmos as never before.

"We have waited a long time to get the IMAX camera back into space and finally the opportunity came with the amazing final repair mission of the Hubble Space Telescope," said Toni Myers, director, producer and editor of the film. "In Hubble 3D, audiences will be able to float in space alongside the astronauts as they perform the repairs and upgrades to the telescope, and then fly to the edge of the universe, through its first new images. Hubble's incredible legacy changes the way we see and think about the universe, and it is an honor to give people a chance to experience its breath-taking images in IMAX 3D."

On Wednesday, September 9th, NASA will unveil the first images from the newly re-furbished Hubble Space Telescope. Visit www.nasa.gov for more information.

Launched in 1990 and greatly extended in its scientific powers through new instrumentation, the Hubble Space Telescope has validated Lyman Spitzer Jr.'s original concept of large, space-based observatory orbiting far above the distorting effects of the Earth's atmosphere. In Hubble 3D audiences will come to understand the profound significance of the greatest scientific instrument since Galileo's original telescope and how it has forever changed both our view of the universe and of ourselves.

Hubble 3D is an IMAX and Warner Bros. Pictures production, in cooperation with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The film reunites the Space Station 3D filmmaking team, led by producer/director Toni Myers. James Neihouse, director of photography, also doubles as the astronaut crew trainer. Judy Carroll is associate producer, and Graeme Ferguson, co-founder of IMAX and pioneer producer of many IMAX space films, is executive producer.
